Young US challenger wins by a whisker beating an international assembly of wine devotees

The traditional Vinexpo Challenge took place on the final day of Vinexpo Bordeaux. A tough challenge, participants taste the five whites and five reds, blind, and then have to identify the grape variety, country of origin and the vintage.

From a field of 50 plus participants, one young sommelier-in-training at CAFA, in Bordeaux, won by a single point – scoring an impressive 63 out of 100.

Victoria Taylor, 23 years of age from Oregon in the United States tasted her way successfully through the international selection of reds from France, Spain, Italy, Chile and Argentina and white wines hailing from Italy, Hungary, France, South Africa – and including a 2017 Riesling from a vineyard in New York State (Herman J Wiemer) that even Victoria had never tasted.

A jubilant Victoria said, « I’d never tasted a New York Riesling before ! The variety of wines was special and very challenging, I’m so pleased to have won my first Vinexpo Challenge. »
