Silver Heights with Torres

Coming on the heels of the announcement that Chinese wine producer Grace Vineyard was switching from Torres China to ASC Fine Wines as distributor for its wines as of January 1st, Torres has put the spotlight on another leading albeit smaller in scale producer with which it has been closely associated, Silver Heights, the small Ningxia boutique winery that has become a international media darling in recent years. A new, more modestly-priced bottling of wines from Silver Heights has just been released under the name The Last Warrior, and is currently available for 128 yuans ($18.50 or 17.50€) in China on the website of everwines, the retail subsidiary of Torres China.

Like Judy Chan, CEO of Grace Vineyard, Silver Heights winemaker Emma Gao has herself become a media star, after gaining early praise in 2010 for her 2007 vintage from British wine critic Jancis Robinson and the RVF (Revue du Vin de France) as well as being chosen for the wine list at exclusive venues such as the five-star Aman resorts in China itself. The critical success of her wines helped put the province of Ningxia, located on the edge of the Gobi desert, some 550 miles (885 km) west of Beijing, in the spotlight as one of China’s best known premium wine regions.
