Vinexpo Bordeaux: Hi Riccardo! Can you tell us a bit about Vinology Houston?
Riccardo: Vinology bottle shop + tasting bar is Houston’s first true European-style enoteca – equal parts wine shop, wine bar and educational venue – offering an immersive wine experience in a convivial atmosphere. Guests can explore and discover new wines every week tasting wine flights at the bar but can also purchase collectible vintages and allocated wines.
Vinexpo Bordeaux: Combined spaces (such as retail stores combined with wine bars) seem to be growing in popularity in the U.S. Why do you think that is?
Riccardo: There are two factors driving the trend. The first one: there is a growing consumer interest in wine experience on a daily basis. Wine is no longer considered an indulgence to be enjoyed on the weekend. The second aspect is having a wine bar together with retail offers opportunities for great profit margins for the business owner as well as a convenience factor for the customer. After trying a wine at the bar, customers are more willing to buy a bottle of the same wine to go. It’s a win-win!
Vinexpo Bordeaux: What are people drinking in Houston these days?
Riccardo: My clients seem really interested in Italian and French wines. The classic wine regions of these two nations like Barolo, Chianti, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Rhone Valley are selling well. At the same time, many of our customers want to experiment and try new trends like natural and orange wines.
Vinexpo Bordeaux: What will you be looking for at Vinexpo Bordeaux 2019?
Riccardo: At Vinexpo Bordeaux 2019 I’m looking for new wines from France, South America and Spain. My goal is to taste wines from wine regions that are not famous yet, but should be. I’d like to find a way to have these wines available in my store and be the first one to have them in the market.
