Marc Almert, new Best Sommelier of the World 2019

Marc Almert, a young German sommelier representing his country, has just been crowned Best Sommelier in the World at the end of a unique competition.

Nika H. Hensen, representing Denmark, finished second, while Raimonds Tomson, previously crowned the best sommelier in Europe, and representing Latvia, was third.

“It’s a dream that has come to an end without me waking up,” said Mr. Almert, 28, who learned of his victory after the 2019 World’s Best Sommelier event on 15 March at Queen Elisabeth Hall in Antwerp. This Cologne native, who is sommelier at the Baur on Lake Zurich, won the title after a series of eight events.
