According to an article in the French trade news weekly V&S News, Japanese Saké has now been recognized and is protected by American law. In Exchange Tokyo has recognized the appellations Tennessee Whisky and Bourbon Whisky. Japanese Saké producers who would like to increase their sales on the American market are extremely pleased with the new legislation. Indeed, the USA are the biggest export market for Japanese sake, representing 25% of sake exports. Yet the USA are also Japanese biggest market challenger, since 70% of Saké consumed in the United States are directly produced in the country. Until American legislation made no clear difference between a Japan- and an America-produced sake.
