Gin bolstered UK alcohol sales

According to new figures from the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA), UK gin sales increased “dramatically” in the first six month of 2017, surpassing £500 million in the off-trade.

Gin is the “standout performer”, up by 16% to reach £687 million , outselling rum and speciality spirits for the fourth consecutive quarter. “Clearly gin is the drink of the moment” said William Lowe, WSET certified spirits educator and master distiller art the Cambridge Distillery.

Over the same period, Tequila grew sales by 8% to total £14 million, off-trade rum saw “good growth”, up by 5% to reach £340 million and liqueurs grew by 1% to £344 million.

Whisky’s yearly sales in the off-trade remained flat at £1,199 million.
