Beer and sake embargoed in North Korea, says EU

As announced by Japan News, beer and sake have been added to the list of products embargoed for trade with North Korea.

These new sanctions are intended to put pressure on North Korea following its extensive missile testing and weapons development.

Beer is an important drink in Korean culture, and the North’s leader, Kim Jong-Un, admits to a certain fondness for cognac and Bordeaux wines.

According to some sources, imports of alcohol have more than doubled (to nearly £20 million) during the first years of his leadership. Imports of champagne have also shown an impressive leap since the death in 2011 of his father and predecessor as leader, Kim Jong-Il.
