Rioja: single vineyard classification approved

After a long negotiation between the Regulatory Council of the Designated Origin Denomination and more than 150 producers, the creation of the new classification ‘vinedos singulares’ has been approved.

In order to propose a new system, reflecting the qualitative efforts of the winegrowers and to deliver the message that the time of wine ageing in barrels is a mark of quality, the Rioja’s Consejo Regulador (DOca) approved a single vineyard mention, like the ‘pyramid structure’ proposed by the Matador Club manifesto.

This vinedos singulares classification will be in addition to the existing classification of Rioja Wines, Crianza, Reserva Gran Reserva, and Joven built on the ‘ageing’ system.

Producers need to justify the ‘natural delimitation’ to put ‘single vineyard’ on the labels, and being allowed a yield of 20% lower than the authorised DOCa while harvesting manually and have full traceability.

Spain will be celebrated during Vinexpo Bordeaux 2017, as country of honor.
