Sharp acceleration of rye whiskey volume

According to the US industry body, the Distilled Spirits Council, revenue from rye whiskey has increased by over 900 per cent in seven years , from $15 million in 2009 to $160 million in 2016.

Over the same period, rye whiskey sales volumes increased by 752 per cent, from 88,000 cases to almost 750,000 cases.

Folllowing a request from the Distilled Spirits Council, the US International Trade Commission unveiled a new export code for rye whiskey. There is already an export code for bourbon.

All whiskey categories are performing. The Distilled Spirits Council revealed that “the value of U.S. distilled spirits exports rose a robust 10.6 percent — up more than $67 million — to a total of $698.5 million in the first half of 2017 as compared with the same period in 2016.”

The Council continued, “American whiskeys including Bourbon, Tennessee Whiskey and American Rye, rose nearly $27 million to $464.6 million, up 6.1 percent.”
